My 808 and Bass Setup for Boom-Bap Beats Without Sidechain
Boom-Bap lives off raw energy. Kick and bass shouldn’t fight each other, they should move like two voices carrying the same rhythm. I don’t want a pumping effect. I want pressure that moves forward, steady and clear.
That’s why I build my mix from the ground up so kick and bass have their own space. Here’s my chain:
1. EQ for the 808
First thing, I cut everything below 20 Hz. Down there it’s just rumble no system can play back clean. The sub stays deep, but not muddy. I leave the rest untouched at first. The 808 has to breathe.

2. Compression
On the 808 I use a Vintage FET Compressor. Ratio 3:1, attack at 10 ms, release at 80 ms. That keeps the attack snappy but tames the low end just a bit. I always listen closely if the compressor pushes too hard. Especially in Boom-Bap, the bass needs to breathe, otherwise it loses its warmth.

3. Saturation and Enhancer
To make sure the 808 and bass are audible on small speakers, I add a touch of saturation. Around 15% saturation, a bit of Vari Drive, and the Bass Enhancer set to “Warm.” That adds harmonics you can feel even on cheap headphones. But here’s the deal: go easy. Too much enhancer makes the bass muddy and kills the clarity.

4. Dynamic EQ (TDR Nova)
This is the core of it. I set a dynamic EQ at 56 Hz. Every time the kick hits, it pulls the bass down right there "about" 2.9 dB, attack 6 ms, release 80 ms. That way the kick has its own space in the low end without the whole beat pumping. But not every kick sits at 56 Hz. Some hit lower, 40–50 Hz, others higher, 60–70 Hz. So I always listen and adjust it to the track.

At the end I test the mix on every system I can: car, Bluetooth speaker, headphones. If the kick cuts through everywhere and the bass doesn’t smear, I know it’s right. Boom-Bap needs pressure, but it also needs clarity.
Compression: Don’t crush it. Your bass has to breathe.Bass Enhancer: Less is more. Too much turns the sound muddy.Kick Frequency: Always check where your kick actually sits – not every one is at 56 Hz
At the end of the day, there’s no single “right” chain. It’s about what feels true to your sound. This is mine, raw and straight.
